Her repertoire falls under the pop and adult contemporary styles, and heavily features the piano, which she usually plays barefoot while performing live.

Biography

[edit]Childhood and discovery
Delta Lea Goodrem was born on 9 November 1984 on the outskirts of Sydney to parents Denis and Lea Goodrem. Her parents named her Delta after the Joe Cocker song, "Delta Lady". Goodrem, who showed a strong interest in music and performing from a very young age, attended The Hills Grammar School, though due to its curriculum placing strong emphasis on sport (Goodrem taking part in netball, running and swimming), music was primarily kept separate.[7] At the age of seven, she appeared in an American commercial for the Galoob toy company, starring alongside fellow Australian Bec Cartwright[8] and began playing piano at the same age while taking up singing, dancing and acting lessons. She appeared in numerous commercials for companies such as Optus and Nesquik, and had several minor roles in episodes of successful Australian television shows including Hey Dad...!, A Country Practice and Police Rescue.[9]
At the age of thirteen Goodrem recorded a five song demo CD, financed through her television work.[10] It was sent to the Sydney Swans Football Club (of which Goodrem is a supporter) and they passed it onto Glenn Wheatley,[11] the manager behind successful Australian artists, Little River Band and John Farnham. Interested in Goodrem's potential as a recording artist, Wheatley signed Goodrem an artist development deal with independent label, Empire Records.[12] Between June 1999 to September 2000, she worked with producers Paul Higgins and Trevor Carter on thirteen tracks for an album called Delta, which saw "an ambitious 15-year-old keen to emulate the pop sound of the Spice Girls, Britney Spears and Mandy Moore."[13] The album has yet to surface, Goodrem preventing its release years later via civil action in 2004.[14]

At the age of 15, Goodrem signed a record deal with Sony[1] and began work on an album of pop-dance songs including the unsuccessful debut single "I Don't Care", which peaked at number sixty-four on the ARIA singles chart in November 2001.[15] The album and proposed second single "A Year Ago Today" were pushed aside as a result, allowing Goodrem and Sony to re-evaluate her future musical direction. In 2002, Goodrem took up the role as shy school girl and aspiring singer Nina Tucker in the popular soap Neighbours,[1] which helped re-launch Goodrem's music career. The piano-based ballad "Born to Try" co-written by Audius Mtawarira premiered on the show and became her first ARIA number one and UK Top 3.[16] Goodrem's role on the show scored her a Logie for "Most Popular New Talent" at the 2003 Logie Awards[17] and two other nominations at the 2004 Logie Awards (including a Gold Logie nomination).
In January 2003, "Lost Without You" again topped the ARIA singles chart[18] and reached number four in the UK, increasing Goodrem's popularity. Her largely self-penned debut album Innocent Eyes was released in March and debuted at number-one on the ARIA album charts, breaking Australian records previously held by John Farnham's Whispering Jack (1986) by staying at number-one for 25 consecutive weeks, while tying with Neil Diamond's Hot August Night (1972) as the second longest charting number-one album with a total of 29 weeks at top spot.[15] It was the highest selling album in Australia of 2010[19] and sold over a million copies in Australia alone, 4.5 million worldwide.[20] The album also charted highly in the UK, peaking at No. 2.[15]
"Not Me, Not I", released following the announcement Goodrem had been diagnosed with cancer, became her fourth consecutive ARIA number-one single, overtaking the previous effort of three number-one's from Kylie Minogue's debut Kylie album.[21]
Goodrem ceased work on Neighbours and her music to begin treatment and in early August, announced she would not renew her contract with Glenn Wheatley, mother Lea Goodrem replacing him as her manager.[22] Later that month, Goodrem won seven ARIA Awards, including "Best Female Artist", surpassing Natalie Imbruglia's previous record of six awards in 1999.[23] Too unwell to perform at the ceremony, singer Darren Hayes performed a rendition of "Lost Without You" as a tribute, bringing an overwhelmed Goodrem to tears. Her first full-length DVD Delta became the highest selling music DVD by an Australian artist in Australia ever, with a certification of 12x platinum,[15] while Australian-only release "Predictable" became her fifth consecutive number one ARIA single in December. Goodrem made a recording that she didn't want to be released publicly and had to battle with her old record company to prevent them from releasing it.[24]
[edit]2004–2006: Mistaken Identity, film debut and The Visualise Tour
After announcing in late December 2003 that she was in remission, Goodrem began work on her second album. In September 2004, she became the face of soft drink giant Pepsi in Australia, appearing on the product, billboards, TV advertisements and performing an exclusive show for competition winners.[25] In October, first single "Out of the Blue", co-written and produced by Guy Chambers, debuted at number-one in Australia and number nine in the UK. October saw Goodrem launch her own lingerie line titled "Delta by Annabella".[26] Goodrem's second album Mistaken Identity, notable for its darker themes inspired by the hardships of her previous twelve months,[27] was released in early November and debuted at number-one in Australia, Top 10 in New Zealand, but peaked at a disappointing number twenty-five in the UK. "Almost Here", a duet with Irish singer Brian McFadden, reached number three in the UK, became her seventh ARIA number one, and her first number one in Ireland. Singles released only in Australia – "Mistaken Identity", "A Little Too Late" and "Be Strong" – were moderately successful.

In March 2005, she starred in her first film role of Hating Alison Ashley, a film based on the popular children's novel, Goodrem acting the title character. The film performed poorly at the box office and was not a critical success, some critics citing Goodrem's performance as too robotic and detached.[28] April saw Goodrem relocate in New York to launch her career in the United States with a re-worked version of "Lost Without You". She appeared in the last two episodes of short-lived American series North Shore in a bid to gain greater exposure around the US. "Lost Without You" proved to be modestly successful, peaking at number eighteen on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, but Goodrem was reportedly dissatisfied with its performance. Plans to release a hybrid of her first two albums were later terminated and Goodrem put America on hold.
In July, Goodrem embarked on her first headline concert tour of Australia, The Visualise Tour. Ticket prices (ninety-nine Australian dollars each) came under criticism for being higher than most international acts touring Australia at the time and this initially led to slow sales.[29] By the time the concerts were due to take place, many venues sold out after tickets were reduced to $60. Once the tour concluded, over 80,000 tickets had been bought in total making The Visualise Tour one of Australia's highest selling local tours.[30] The Visualise Tour: Live in Concert was released in November and became Goodrem's second No. 1 DVD.
On 15 March 2006, Goodrem performed a new song, "Together We Are One", at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in front of 80,000 spectators and up to 1.5 billion television viewers worldwide. The song, written specifically for the event with Chambers and McFadden, was released in Australia, peaking at number two,[31] and was performed by the Top 5 contestants on American Idol. In June, Goodrem signed to Modest! Entertainment for her worldwide management.[32] October saw Goodrem promoting in Japan with the release of an updated version of Innocent Eyes and the Japan-only single "Flawed", which reached number one on the Japanese download chart. The album peaked at number eight on the Japanese international chart (excluding Japanese artists) and number nineteen on the official Japanese album chart (including Japanese artists). In November, Goodrem appeared with Westlife on UK talent series The X Factor to perform a duet titled "All Out of Love", which appeared on the boyband's ninth LP, The Love Album. She was in Melbourne on Christmas Eve to headline the annual Carols by Candlelight.[33]
[edit]2007–2009: Delta, American debut and The Believe Again Tour
On 10 August 2007 Goodrem was in Los Angeles to film the music video for "In This Life", the first single which is also the opening theme for the anime Deltora Quest, based on the novels by fellow Australian Emily Rodda. The video premiered on 31 August on Sunrise. "In This Life" was released as the first single from her new album on 15 September. It debuted at number one on the Australian Singles Chart, becoming Goodrem's eighth number one single in Australia.

Her latest album, self titled Delta, was released in Australia on 20 October 2007. Goodrem has described the material as "...a lot lighter" compared to her previous album Mistaken Identity.[34] In January she stated, "As people become more aware of your life, they can pinpoint what songs are about. On this album, I've tried to remove a lot of that and just write great pop songs, songs that are from my heart but there's no baggage with them".[35][36] The album debuted on number one on the ARIA albums chart, marking her third number one album in her home country, and received platinum certification for shipments of 70,000 records, though sales were much lower; only 23,000 copies were sold during the first week. In December the album received a 2x platinum award for shipments of 140,000 copies.[37] The album was certified 3x Platinum in February.

The second single of the album was "Believe Again", released in December. The video for the song was one of the most expensive ones made in the Australian music history.[38] It was the most added song on the radio of week 46.[39] The song debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Australian Singles Chart. The third single, "You Will Only Break My Heart", was released on 29 March 2008 and peaked at No. 14. The fourth single to be lifted from the album is "I Can't Break It To My Heart", which debuted and peaked at No. 13. Following the release of the lead single, Goodrem currently holds the record for most No. 1 singles on the ARIA charts by an any artist, with 8.
According to Goodrem, she is going to explore new places around the world in 2008, including Brazil.[40] Goodrem has also written numerous songs that have been recorded by other artists, one song even being used as the winners song in Norweign Idol in 2007. Goodrem wrote the Middle-Eastern influenced song, "Eyes On Me", which was recorded by Celine Dion and released as the second single from her worldwide hit album, Taking Chances. It was originally intended to be included on Goodrem's album but didn't make the cut. "Eyes On Me" was released as the second single in the UK from Taking Chances in early January 2008.[41][42]
In January 2009, Goodrem embarked on her Believe Again Tour tour of Australia to support her third studio album Delta.[citation needed] She also recorded a duet, "Gotta Be Right Here With You", with Olivia Newton-John to help raise money for Newton-John's cancer hospital in Melbourne.[43][44]
In February 2008 different sources reported Goodrem had been dropped by her record company in the US, Sony BMG.[45][46] Her partner McFadden, however, claimed she had just switched record labels. She is now a part of Mercury Records.[47] He also stated she was at that moment in Los Angeles to shoot a new video and the cover for the US version of Delta.[47]
In July 2008 Goodrem released her third album in the United States. The tracklisting was the same as the Australian version, with one song ("The Guardian") replaced by "Born To Try".
In July 2008 it was announced that Goodrem would embark on a national tour of Australia, titled the Believe Again Tour.[48] She originally announced nine dates in seven cities, but later announced more shows, performing 14 in eight cities. The tour ran from 9 January to 4 February 2009.
Goodrem was nominated for two awards at the 2008 ARIA Awards – Highest Selling Single and Highest Selling Album – and won the award for Highest Selling Album of 2008.[49] At the 2008 World Music Awards held on 9 November in Monaco Goodrem received her third World Music Award for World's Best Selling Australian Artist.

During a recent Australian interview it was mentioned by Goodrem that she will begin work on her fourth studio album, due to be released in 2011. Goodrem was a guest judge at the Sydney auditions for the seventh season of Australian Idol from 16 May to 18 May, and received good reviews for the guest appearance. Goodrem has become the latest global face of Proactiv Solution, promoting the skin and care treatment alongside Vanessa Williams and Jessica Simpson.
A concert DVD of Goodrem's Believe Again Tour was released on 18 September 2009.[50] The DVD of the Believe Again Tour debuted at No. 1 on the ARIA Music DVD Charts.
Goodrem is selected to host for the 7th annual Nickelodeon Australian Kids' Choice Awards, along with co-hosts Benji Madden and Joel Madden on 13 November.
Goodrem was invited to sing with Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli at his American Christmas concerts after wowing producer David Foster with her talent when she gatecrashed his birthday soiree. She performed in 4 of his concerts, as well as additional concerts in Las Vegas and Anaheim. Goodrem topped the Aria End of Decade album charts with Innocent Eyes coming in at No. 1 ahead of P!nk's Funhouse. During Prince William's Australian Promotional Tour Delta got the chance to have lunch with the Prince during his visit to Melbourne before he went to the Australian Open to watch Roger Federer's match. Delta commented via Twitter that -What an honour! Just left lunch with the charming Prince William and an amazing, inspirational group of young Australians. xx- [51]
Australian launch of Michael Jackson's This Is It DVD, March 2010: Goodrem and Guy Sebastian were chosen by the Jackson estate to perform at the Australian launch of This Is It.[52] The invitation only event was attended by the film's director Kenny Ortega, Michael's choreographer Travis Payne, and Michael's brother Jackie Jackson[53] Goodrem and Sebastian performed "Earth Song".[54]
Goodrem told the Courier Mail during a recent interview that the new album will be more "stripped back"; she also explained "I've done a 360 back to where I started, but hopefully it's more evolved. I feel I've stepped up my game. I'm experimenting with different chord changes and different areas of music." Goodrem moved to Los Angeles to work on the album. [55]
Goodrem was selected by Andrea Bocelli to rejoin him for his 2010 Asian Tour in late April, early May. The Tour Kicked off in Tokyo, Japan with additional shows in South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.[56]
In August 2010 it was announced that Delta and her fiance Brian McFadden might be guest judges on the UK TV show X Factor. [edit]Personal life

Goodrem was born to Lea and Denis (now divorced) and she has a younger brother, Trent,[59] who is an AFL football player with the Central District Football Club in the SANFL.[60]
[edit]Cancer
On 8 July 2003, at the age of 18, Goodrem was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a form of cancer which attacks the body's immune system. She was forced to put all working commitments on hold while undertaking treatment for the disease. In an exclusive interview with the Australian Women's Weekly, Goodrem revealed that, since 2002, she has suffered from a head to toe rash, fatigue, weight loss, night sweats, and a lump on her neck.[61] "I was doing sit-ups when I felt something pop in my neck. I reached down and I felt a small lump at the base of my throat. It wasn't sore, it wasn't visible, but I could feel it."[62] As part of her treatment, Goodrem undertook chemotherapy, which resulted in the loss of her hair, and radiation therapy.[63]
The news of her diagnosis made newspaper and television headlines and an outpouring of support was shown by fans and the general public alike, Goodrem thanking them during The Visualise Tour for all the letters and well wishes she received. Much of Goodrem's 2004 album Mistaken Identity, in particular "Extraordinary Day", is inspired by her battle.[27] Reflecting on that period of her life, Goodrem says,
“ It's weird to see pictures of that time. In some ways the fact that I was so sick was so out there, and yet I kept it really private. No-one saw me on the days I was really sick...I was 18 when I was diagnosed and I had a number one album and single in the country. And in the UK, I was number two. It was such a bipolar year.[64] ”
[edit]Relationships
In 2004, Goodrem began a nine month relationship with Australian tennis player Mark Philippoussis. Her "comeback" single "Out of the Blue" was written about his support during her cancer battle.[65] The couple ended in controversy when newspapers reported Philippoussis had been unfaithful.[66] In 2004, Goodrem began dating former Westlife singer Brian McFadden.[67]
In the album sleeve of "Delta", Goodrem is candid about her mother, writing "I'm sorry we hurt each other, this chapter was hard to write. Be strong in this next chapter, there's so many memories to make, laughs and smiles to have." Goodrem also thanked McFadden. saying "You made me believe again in life, love, music, and to be the best person and therefore the best artist I can be. Every dream I have, we're standing side by side, we laugh, we sing, we cry."
On 30 November 2007, Goodrem and McFadden announced they were engaged. In his book, McFadden wrote that he proposed to her on a trip to Bali. OK Magazine Australia revealed that McFadden had planned the proposal for months and the couple planned to wed in December 2009.[citation needed] The wedding was, however, delayed, with Australian media reporting that the couple had sold their mansion in Hunters Hill and were living separately – Goodrem in the US and McFadden with friends in Melbourne – due to their careers taking them in different directions. However, McFadden laughed off split rumours.[68] On 1 April 2011, it was confirmed that McFadden and Goodrem called off their engagement. The couple released a joint statement stating that they wished each other 'every success and happiness in the future. [69]
As of June 2011, she is dating teen popstar Nick Jonas [70]

Goodrem released her third studio album, self-titled Delta, on 20 October 2007 to yet another number-one debut, gaining multi-platinum status within the first few months of release. Goodrem also shifted attention to different markets, releasing the album in the Far East and the USA. In January 2009, Goodrem embarked on the Believe Again Tour of Australia to support her third studio album.[49] She has sold approximately 5 million albums, and 6 million combined albums and singles worldwide.[72]

Nick is of Irish (from his maternal grandfather), Cherokee, Italian, and German descent.[6][7]
He was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at the age of 13 and wears an OmniPod insulin pump to help him manage his condition.[8] He has developed the Change for the Children Foundation. Partnering with five different charities, their goal is to raise money and awareness for diabetes.[9] He also developed a public service announcement with the Washington Nationals to support diabetes care at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.[10]
Since August 6, 2008, Bayer Diabetes Care has partnered with Jonas as a diabetes ambassador to promote the idea for young people to manage their diabetes.[11] Jonas testified in the U.S. Senate to promote more research funding for the condition.[12]
Miley Cyrus has stated that she dated Jonas from June 2006 to December 2007. Cyrus claimed they were "in love" and began dating soon after they first met.[13][14]
As of June 2011, he is dating Australian singer Delta Goodrem[15] who is 8 years older than him.
Acting

Theatre
Jonas's career started when he was discovered at the age of 6 in a barber shop while his mother was getting her hair cut and was referred to a professional show business manager.[16][17] At the age of 7, he began performing on Broadway.[18][19] He had acted in several plays, including A Christmas Carol (in 2000 as Tiny Tim and Scrooge at eight), Annie Get Your Gun (in 2001 as Little Jake), Beauty and the Beast (in 2002 as Chip), and Les Misérables (in 2003 as Gavroche).[19][20][21][22] After Les Misérables closed, he performed in The Sound of Music (as Kurt) at the Paper Mill Playhouse.[23]
On June 21, 2010 Jonas made his West End debut performing in Les Misérables for the second time, but this time as the role of Marius Pontmercy.[24] Jonas was originally supposed to play the role for only three weeks, but was able to extend his run until July 24, 2010 because of changes in the Jonas Brothers tour schedule.[25] He also appeared in the 25th Anniversary Concert at The O2 Arena on October 3, 2010, again playing the role of Marius Pontmercy.[26] From August 5–7, 2011 Nick will perform in the musical Hairspray as Link Larkin.[27]
Television
On August 17, 2007, Jonas, along with his brothers, guest starred in an episode of Hannah Montana, which aired after the premiere of High School Musical 2 and the Disney Channel show Phineas and Ferb.[28] The episode broke basic cable records with a record 10.7 million viewers and became basic cable's most watched series telecast ever.[29]
Jonas and his brothers filmed a Disney Channel Original Movie called Camp Rock where they play a band called "Connect Three." Joe plays the lead male role and lead singer "Shane Gray"; Nick plays the role of "Nate," a guitarist; and Kevin plays the role of "Jason," also a guitarist. A soundtrack for the movie was released on June 17, 2008. The movie premiered on June 20, 2008 in the USA on Disney Channel, and Canada on Family. Production began on the sequel, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam in September 2009 and it premiered during the summer of 2010.
The reality short series, Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream, premiered on Disney Channel on May 16, 2008. The show, which ran until September 5, 2008, documents the brothers' lives on the Look Me In The Eyes Tour. The name was inspired by the band's hit song "When You Look Me in the Eyes". The series was renewed for a second season, which premiered on March 21, 2010.[30] The second season follows the band on the European leg of their World Tour 2009.
Jonas and his brothers previously starred in the Disney Channel Original Series JONAS about a pop band trying to live a normal life, which premiered May 2, 2009 and concluded on March 14, 2010. Filming for the second season began in February 2010. The second season was renamed Jonas L.A., and premiered on June 20, 2010. On November 8, 2010, it was announced that the series had been cancelled.[31]
Jonas will appear in the 2011 series Mr. Sunshine; he will play Eli White, an up-and-coming singer who wants everything his way before he performs at the Sunshine Center.[32]

Solo artist
In 2002 while performing in Beauty and the Beast, Nick had written a song with his father called "Joy to the World (A Christmas Prayer)." With background vocals from the Beauty and the Beast cast, Nick performed the song on the 2002 annual Broadway "Equity Fights AIDS" album, Broadway's Greatest Gifts: Carols for a Cure, Vol. 4.[33][34] In November 2003, INO Records received a demo copy of "Joy To The World (A Christmas Prayer)."[35] The label released the song to Christian radio, where it quickly became popular on Record & Radio's Christian Adult Contemporary Chart.[34] While Nick was working on his solo project, Joe followed in his footsteps to Broadway, appearing in Baz Luhrmann's production of La Boheme.
By September 2004, an executive at Columbia Records found out about Nick's song.[33][34] Nick was soon jointly signed to INO Records and Columbia Records and released the single "Dear God".[36][37] A second single, "Joy to the World (A Christmas Prayer)" (a new solo recording), was released on November 16.[38] It was supposed to be followed by a December release of a self-titled solo album Nicholas Jonas, but the album was pushed back.[39] It did, however, get a limited release.[40] Nick, along with Kevin and Joe, had written several other songs for the album.[33]
In early 2005, Columbia Records' new president, Steve Greenberg, listened to Nick's record. While Greenberg did not like the album, he did like Nick's voice.[41]
Nick Jonas is currently working on a side project from the Jonas Brothers called "Nick Jonas and the Administration". Their debut album Who I Am was released February 2, 2010. The band members consist of Tommy Barbarella on keyboard, Michael Bland on drums, John Fields on bass, and David Ryan Harris on guitar.[42] Although David Ryan Harris recorded guitar in the studio for Who I Am he was unable to go on tour with the rest of band and was ultimately replaced by Sonny Thompson.
In January 2010 Jonas embarked on the Who I Am Tour with the Administration. This was Jonas' first tour without his brothers. The tour consisted of 22 dates that began on January 2, 2010 in Dallas, Texas and concluded on January 30, 2010 in Berkeley, California.

After meeting with Jonas and hearing the song, "Please Be Mine", written and performed by the brothers, Daylight/Columbia Records decided to sign the three as a group act.[33][43][44] After being signed to Columbia, the brothers considered naming their group "Sons of Jonas" before settling on the name "Jonas Brothers."[45]
It's About Time, the brothers' first album was released on August 8, 2006.[46] According to the band's manager, it was only a "limited release" of a little over 50,000 copies. Because Sony was not interested in further promoting the band, the Jonas Brothers considered switching labels. The band was ultimately dropped by Columbia Records in early 2007.
After shortly being without a label, the Jonas Brothers signed with Hollywood Records in February 2007.[47][48] Around the same time, brothers began appearing in commercials for Baby Bottle Pops, singing the jingle.[48] Their self-titled second album, Jonas Brothers, was released on August 7, 2007.[49] It reached number five on the Billboard 200 chart in its first week. It has since sold over three million copies worldwide.
The Jonas Brothers' third studio album, A Little Bit Longer, was released in the United States on August 12, 2008. It sold over 2 million copies worldwide. The Jonas Brothers were listed number 9 on the richest pop acts of 2008.

Tiki Barber

Tiki Barber

Atiim Kiambu Hakeem-Ah "Tiki" Barber (pronounced /ˈtiːki/) (born April 7, 1975) is an American football running back who is currently a free agent. He was drafted by the New York Giants in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft. He played college football at Virginia.
Barber retired from the NFL at the end of the 2006 NFL postseason as the New York Giants' all-time rushing and reception leader. On February 13, 2007, he was formally introduced as a correspondent for NBC's The Today Show and Football Night in America/Sunday Night Football. Tiki was also the host of NBC's pre-show for the 66th Golden Globe Awards with Brooke Burke and Nancy O'Dell. On September 18, 2007, Barber's book, Tiki: My Life and the Game Beyond was published. The autobiography was co-written by Gil Reavill. His second book, Tiki Barber's Pure Hard Workout, which was released on November 13, 2008, by Gotham Books, reveals Barber's intensive lifting program. The book is coauthored by his trainer, Joe Carini. He is the twin brother of NFL cornerback Ronde Barber.
On March 8, 2011, Barber filed papers with the NFL to come out of retirement.

NFL career

Originally considered a third-down, "change of pace" back, Barber became a standout starting running back and the all-time leader in rushing yards in New York Giants history. In 2005, he was the NFL's top yardage gainer from the line of scrimmage. He was voted by his peers to three Pro Bowls. From 2003-2006, Tiki Barber gained the most yards from scrimmage by any NFL running back in that 4-year period.
[edit]1997-1999
Barber was drafted by the New York Giants in the 2nd round of the 1997 NFL Draft out of the University of Virginia. He was originally intended to be a third-down running back until Rodney Hampton had disappointing years in 1996 and 1997. Hampton retired after the 1997 season, giving Barber the starting nod. He began his career with a mediocre rookie campaign in which he started at running back and ran for 511 yards and 3 touchdowns. He missed four games with a knee injury, but returned to the starting lineup for the final two games of the year. In 1998, he was replaced as a starter and went through a disappointing, injury-riddled year before rebounding in 1999 when he accumulated 1,639 all-purpose yards, utilizing his punt return and receiving skills.
[edit]2000-2004
Tiki Barber and the Giants represented the NFC in Super Bowl XXXV in 2001 but lost the game to the Baltimore Ravens. Established as a starter and playmaker, Barber was rewarded with a six-year contract from the Giants following the 2000 season. Following the signing, he called himself "the happiest man in New York right now."
Over the next four years Barber would become an integral part of the Giants' offense. In the last regular season game of 2002, Tiki exploded for 203 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles, at that time one of the league's best defenses. His performance helped the Giants clinch a playoff berth, but the team fell to the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round. He ended the season with 1,984 yards from scrimmage.
The 2003 NFL season saw the Giants finish an abysmal 4-12. During the 2004 NFL season, Barber reached the endzone for a career-high 15 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,518 yards and notched 578 receiving yards for 2,096 total yards from scrimmage. On January 2, 2005, in the 2004 season finale at home versus the Dallas Cowboys, Tiki broke Rodney Hampton's Giants' all-time rushing record and Joe Morris's single-season rushing record in the same game. Poignantly, Barber broke the record on the final offensive play of the game, when he scored a game-winning touchdown to end an otherwise dismal 6-10 season for the Giants on a high point.
However, the team struggled once again and won only six contests in the 2004 season. As he approached age 30, Barber's goal was not just to run for 1,500-plus yards each year but also to be part of a team that would win a Super Bowl title. He impressed this message upon younger players who he thought did not appreciate how rarely the opportunity to win a championship comes along.
[edit]2005 season
2005 was a rebound year for the Giants and Barber's career year in terms of rushing yards. Led by Eli Manning and Barber, they finished 11-5 and won the NFC East title for the first time since 2000. On December 17, 2005, Barber broke the Giants' single-game rushing record against the Kansas City Chiefs, rushing for 220 yards; he would break his own record the following year. It was his second (of three) 200-yard rushing games during the 2005 season, as he ran for 206 yards in week 8, after a bedside promise to ailing owner Wellington Mara that the team would put forward its best effort. The Giants promptly shut out the Washington Redskins 36-0 two days after Mara was buried, proper homage to their beloved owner, to whom Tiki himself was especially close.
He finished the 2005 regular season with 1,860 rushing yards (second in the league to Shaun Alexander and a career high for Barber) and 2,390 all-purpose yards with a performance of 203 rushing yards against the Oakland Raiders in the final game of the season. Barber's 95-yard touchdown run set a Giants' team record for longest touchdown run, previously held by Hap Moran for a 91-yard run on November 23, 1930 vs the Green Bay Packers.[3]
The season ended prematurely, as the Giants were shut out 23-0 to the Carolina Panthers in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
Barber's 2,390 total yards for 2005 was second highest in NFL history, at the time, behind Marshall Faulk's 2,429 total yards in 1999. It is also the highest total for a running back 30 years of age or older. He was named to the NFC Pro Bowl squad for the second time in his career, and was voted an All Pro. Barber placed fourth in the voting for the 2005 MVP award. Seattle Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander won the Award, followed by Peyton Manning (second place) and Tom Brady (third place).
He was nominated for the 2005 FedEx Ground Player of the Year Award, along with LaDainian Tomlinson and Shaun Alexander. Barber also signed a contract extension in September 2005 which extended his contract through 2008 and increased his pay.
[edit]2006 season
In the 2006 season, Barber continued his fine play in his final season and final games as an NFL player, a rarity for running backs who often break down late in their careers. His total yardage on the season was higher than any other running back in history in their last season.
Barber rushed for 1,662 yards and five touchdowns in his 2006 campaign. During week 14 at Carolina, Barber rushed for 112 yards to help the Giants end a four-game losing skid. Tiki's best game in 2006 was in Week 17 at Washington, where he rushed for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Giants 34-28 victory against the Redskins, a win that gave the Giants a playoff berth. In that game, Tiki set a new team record for rushing yards in a single game by breaking his own record, which he had set the previous year versus Kansas City. His 234 rushing yards are the most ever by a player over 30 years old. He also holds the record for most 200 yard rushing games by a player over 30 years old with four. Only three other players have one.
In his final game with the Giants, a playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Barber rushed for 137 yards on 26 carries. After the game, Eagles safety Brian Dawkins embraced Barber and told him, "You're a warrior."[4]
As a Pro Bowler in his final season, Barber's last official game was the 2007 Pro Bowl on on February 10, 2007 in Hawaii.
[edit]NFL retirement
In October 2006, Barber revealed his intention to retire at the end of the 2006 NFL season. Barber had previously indicated his desire to retire at some point and pursue a broadcasting career. When questioned why a player at the peak of his game would retire, Barber cited the toll the physical nature of football takes on a person's body.
During his career with the Giants, the team never won a championship, a top goal of Barber's that he spoke publicly about in 2005. When announcing his retirement, Barber seemed at peace to leave the game without a Super Bowl ring. He said, "I used to think my career was defined by not winning a Super Bowl. But I think looking back on my career, they'll see someone who was a competitor, someone who always played hard and never gave up." [5] He officially filed his retirement papers with the Players Association on February 12, 2007.
In the very next NFL season following Barber's retirement, the New York Giants went on to defeat the previously undefeated New England Patriots to win Super Bowl XLII,in one of the greatest upsets in NFL history. Barber was present to cover the event, but was not well received by most of his former teammates and Giants' fans.[6]
[edit]Return to NFL
On March 8, 2011, Barber filed paperwork to come out of retirement.[2] Although the New York Giants still retained the rights to Barber, the Giants planned to release him once the NFL and the NFLPA reach a collective bargaining agreement.[2]
On April 28, 2011, Barber was quoted saying that his comeback was "not about the money"; however, the New York Post ran a news story last year that contradicts that. They reported that Barber is coming back into the NFL because Barber was broke and couldn't pay his divorce settlement with his ex-wife.[7]
On July 28, 2011, the Giants officially removed Barber from the retired list, allowing him to freely sign with any team.[8] On August 2, 2011, Barber took a step closer to coming out of retirement by working out with the Miami Dolphins.[9]
On September 5, 2011, Barber's agent, Mark Lepselter [10] confirmed that none of the teams within the NFL had shown any interest in signing the running back to a new fifty-three man roster.[11][12]
[edit]Player Profile

[edit]Running style
Starting from his breakout season in 2000, Barber was known for his exceptional cutback running, quick feet, and running vision. He also was an adept receiver out of the backfield with over 450 receiving yards and over 50 receptions every season from 2000 to 2006.
After the 2003 year, in spite of his rushing numbers, Tiki had one glaring weakness to overcome: fumbling the football. Barber had six lost fumbles in both the 2002 and 2003 seasons, including three lost fumbles in a single game against the Philadelphia Eagles on December 28, 2002. When Coach Tom Coughlin arrived he taught Tiki to hold the ball vertically instead of horizontally (a common method adopted in rugby). After changing this his fumbles went down dramatically: in 2004, he only had 2 lost fumbles.
Barber began to focus on strength training and lifting in 2004, upon the suggestion of his new running backs coach, Jerald Ingram. Tiki began to work with a strength coach, Joe Carini, in New Jersey. His added upper-body strength allowed him to break more tackles and become a more powerful runner. Barber also improved in other ways over the course of his career. He improved his patience as a runner, waiting for blocks to set and holes to emerge before accelerating forward. He also learned to deliver blows to defenders instead of being on the receiving end of them.[13] He also benefitted from an improved offensive line and Coughlin's emphasis on the running game.
[edit]Career highlights
In 2006, Barber became only the 21st player in NFL history to rush for over 10,000 yards during his career. Tiki also became the third player in NFL history to gain more than 10,000 rushing yards and 5,000 receiving yards in a NFL career, joining Marshall Faulk and Marcus Allen.

He is one of only 11 running backs to have over 400 receptions and 10,000 yards rushing. Walter Payton, Marshall Faulk, Marcus Allen, Thurman Thomas, Emmitt Smith, Curtis Martin, Edgerrin James, Ricky Watters, Warrick Dunn, and LaDainian Tomlinson are the other ten.

Tiki Barber led the Giants in rushing in every game from the beginning of the 2002 season through the end of the 2006 season, an NFL record 80 consecutive games.

[edit]Strahan contract controversy
In 2002, All-Pro Giants defensive end Michael Strahan was negotiating a new contract, and Tiki Barber publicly criticized Michael Strahan's negotiating stance. He felt Strahan should have agreed to the contract the Giants offered and remarked that Strahan was greedy. The contract impacted the team as Strahan's cap number exceeded $12 million and the new contract would have lowered Strahan's cap number, greatly helping the team get under the 2002 Salary Cap. "I don't know if he realizes how much $17 million is," Barber told the NY Post. "That is absolutely ridiculous, to turn that down. He's already the highest-paid defensive player in the league. He's already making more than most quarterbacks...Michael is not thinking about the team; he's thinking about himself".[14]
Keith Hamilton, a teammate of Strahan and Barber at the time, then responded with comments critical of Barber. Players generally believe that they should not speak about the contracts of other players. Beyond that, some members of the Giants defense harbored resentment of the offense, which was lackluster and unproductive in the 1990s. "The defense has carried the offense, carried the team, since I've been here," Hamilton told The Star-Ledger. "[Barber] hasn't been here long enough or done enough to say anything. For him to shoot his mouth off, acting like he's Mr. New York, yeah, I'm ticked off. Strahan is the single-season sack record-holder. He's the AP Defensive Player of the Year. He's one of the best - if not the best - defensive ends in the game. And you tell me this guy is being greedy? That's a bunch of crap. I've heard enough. Who is Tiki Barber to shoot his mouth off? What has he done? He talks like he's acting in the best interest of the team. Tell him to give his $7 million (signing bonus) back. Since he's so charitable, why doesn't he volunteer his $7 million? He says all the politically correct things. Ask him if he's giving up some of his money." Despite this incident, Strahan and Barber are currently friendly with each other in public.[14]
[edit]Coaching criticism
Although Barber's statistics improved greatly after Tom Coughlin became the Giants' head coach, Barber disliked and criticized Coughlin's coaching style. During the coach's tenure, Barber publicly questioned the team's coaching on two occasions. After being shut out at home in the first round of the 2005 playoffs by the Carolina Panthers, Tiki made a post-game comment that he felt the Giants had been outcoached by their former defensive coordinator, the Panthers' head coach John Fox. Heavy sports media attention was placed on the comment; Tiki apologized for it shortly afterwards, saying he only meant to convey the Giants' performance was 'unacceptable'.
After a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2006 season, Barber criticized the playcalling for abandoning the running game too soon.[15] Both times Coughlin and Barber met to discuss the comments.
On the eve of what would be his last game with the Giants, Barber told ESPN that he is "demeaned and talked down to" by Coughlin.[16]
After retiring, Barber attributed his decision to retire to Coughlin's unrelenting style in practice. "(Coughlin) pushed me in the direction (of television)," said Barber. "I don't know if you realize this, but we were in full pads for 17 weeks, and with the amount of injuries that we had, it just takes a toll on you. You physically don't want to be out there, when your body feels the way you do, in full pads."[citation needed]
[edit]Feud with Eli Manning
Just after his retirement, Barber questioned Giants quarterback and ex-teammate Eli Manning's leadership abilities in an interview before the start of the 2007 season. Barber was quoted as saying that Manning's motivational pre-game speeches sounded "almost comical." According to the New York Daily News, Manning dismissed Barber's critique as irrelevant and questioned the ex-Giant's leadership skills, too. "I'm not going to lose any sleep about what Tiki has to say," Manning said. "I guess I could have questioned his leadership skills last year with calling out the coach and having articles about him retiring in the middle of the season, and [how] he's lost the heart [to play]. As a quarterback you're reading that your running back has lost the heart to play the game and it's about the 10th week. I can see that a little bit at times." Manning went on to lead the Giants to a win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII that season.
[edit]Post-football career

[edit]Broadcasting
After retiring from the NFL, Barber began a second career as a television broadcaster. Barber immediately landed a role with NBC in which he contributed to the Today program, covered sports for NBC Sports, and hosted entertainment events for NBC Universal. Barber was introduced as a correspondent for NBC's Today and analyst for Football Night in America/Sunday Night Football on February 13, 2007.[1] This came after a competition for his services was waged between ABC, FOX, NFL, and NBC. As a Today correspondent, Barber anchored lifestyle segments and reports on news stories. He was rumored to be a potential long-term candidate for Matt Lauer's co-host position when Lauer retires in 2011.
Barber is unusual among retired athletes in his desire to cover hard news and political stories; in 2006 Barber cited a lunch with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as the highlight of his year.[17]
While still an NFL player, Barber gained broadcasting experience. On television, he co-hosted the morning news program Fox & Friends on select Tuesday mornings. On radio, he hosted Barber Shop a weekly show on Sirius Satellite Radio with his brother Ronde during the football season. In the offseason, he hosted a political and general interest radio program; Senator John McCain was his first interview. Barber originally began his broadcasting career on WFAN radio and the WCBS local news in New York.
In May 2008, Barber filled the spot of Willie Geist on the MSNBC program Morning Joe while Geist was on vacation.
In August 2008, Barber helped broadcast the 2008 Summer Olympics on MSNBC and was a commentator for Yahoo! sports for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Barber was the 'mobile shout out' on an episode of the Discovery Channel game show Cash Cab. The question was "What is the name of the famous John Steinbeck novel that followed the travels of Tom Joad?". Both Barber and the contestant incorrectly answered with Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry; the correct answer was The Grapes of Wrath.
In the 2008 series Knight Rider, Barber played a drill sergeant who was murdered during an underground MMA fight in the episode "Fight Knight". His character was filmed dressing down an unseen private and used by KITT to distract the owner of the illegal club long enough to allow for capture by Michael. He was also spoofed by KITT at the end of the episode.
Barber appears in multiple episodes as himself in the 2009 iteration of The Electric Company. His "character" is adored by women and adolescents alike and is portrayed as a very likable and forthright role model. One episode even puts him in the role of a judge, trying a case of pet negligence towards his bird.
In the Dave Matthews Band music video, for their song "Everyday", Barber was featured as one of the people being hugged.

He is the identical twin brother of Ronde Barber, a cornerback who plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Until recently, Barber lived in New York City with his wife, fellow University of Virginia alum Ginny Cha, whom he married on May 15, 1999. (Atiim Kiambu Junior), born July 8, 2002, and Chason, born March 18, 2004 and twin daughters born May 24, 2010.[24] Reports surfaced that Barber had left his pregnant wife for a much younger woman, 23-year-old former NBC intern Traci Lynn Johnson.[25]
In the May 30, 2011 issue of Sports Illustrated, Barber described hiding out with Johnson in his agent Mark Lepselter's attic so that he wouldn't get caught.[26] Barber was quoted as saying that "Lep's Jewish, and it was like a reverse Anne Frank thing." Barber's comments were quickly condemned by the New York media.[27]
